Basil Khaleel Ibraheem

My experience

Nicole ZrenehMy name is Basil Khaleel Ibraheem. I come from Palestine, from the West Bank, and came to Germany at the end of 2017 – with the goal of studying human medicine and building a better future for myself. After intensively studying German for nine months in 2018 and successfully passing the language exams, I was able to begin my medical studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in April 2019. In June 2025, I completed my studies within the standard period of study – a moment I am very proud of, because this is not a given in human medicine.

I became aware of the scholarship through my cousin, who is studying dentistry in Germany. He told me about this opportunity during the coronavirus pandemic, but also that applying for medical students is only possible after the Physikum (Physics Examination) – the first state examination in medical school, which represents the biggest hurdle for many. I applied one semester before my Physikum (Physics Examination), and shortly before the exam, I received the news that I could be accepted – provided I passed the exam. This acceptance was an enormous motivation for me to pass the exam and, at the same time, a great relief for my family, who had supported me up until then.

The scholarship was invaluable to me in the years that followed. It enabled me to concentrate fully on my studies and successfully complete them in the shortest possible time. Especially during the difficult coronavirus years, when my family's financial situation in Palestine was not easy, this support was an enormous relief for us. Not only did I feel like I was putting less of a burden on my family, but I was also able to pursue my own path more independently. In addition to the financial support, the scholarship also gave me a great deal personally.
